Although I must admit I'm not a true black metal fan, I really enjoy Opus Irae's music. Therefore, my music recommendation today is their most successful track to date: The Burden of Man.
The link to the live performance is down below, the link to studio version is on the german page
Iron Maiden was formed in 1975 by Paul Day (vocals), Steve Harris (bass), Ron Matthews (drums), Dave Sullivan, and Terry Rance (guitar). The beginning was chaotic, so much so that by the time the self-titled debut was released in 1980, only Steve remained. All other positions had been replaced several times, leaving him with Paul Di'Anno (vocals), Clive Burr (drums), guitarist Dennis Stratton, and Dave Murray, who was in his second tenure with the Maidens, to support him. Nevertheless, the band…
Judas Priest was founded in 1969 by Alan Atkins (vocals), K. K. Downing (guitar), Ian Hill (bass), and John Ellis (drums). Initially, the drum lineup changed, with John Hinch replacing him on "Rocka Rolla." They also had a second guitarist, Glenn Tipton, and a new singer, Rob Halford. The band's potential was elusive on their debut album; it contained lame blues/psychedelic rock. Better was "Sad Wings of Destiny," released two years later, featuring Alan Moore, who had previously been on the…
Saxon was formed in 1976 as Son Of A Bitch by Biff Byford (vocals), Doobie Dawson (bass), John Walker (drums), Paul Quinn, and Graham Oliver (guitar). Before the name was changed, John was out and replaced by Pete Gill. Thus, their self-titled debut was released in 1979, which was only partly metal, with progressive and glam influences, and was hardly a pleasure to listen to. While this album was hardly successful, their breakthrough came with "Wheels Of Steel," on which they found their style…
Edguy was founded in Fulda in 1992 by guitarists Jens Ludwig and Dirk Sauer, along with singer, keyboardist, and bassist Tobias Sammet and drummer Dominik Storch. After several years of finally securing a record deal, their debut album, "Kingdom Of Madness," was released in 1997. It featured soft power metal in the style of Helloween and Gamma Ray. However, Tobias was no longer featured on bass on this album, as they had hired Tobias Exxel, a full-time drummer, to handle the steel strings. This…
Within Temptation was founded in the Netherlands in 1996 by Sharon Jenny den Adel (vocals), her friend Robert Westerholt (vocals and guitar), Michiel Papenhove (guitar), Jeroen van Veen (bass), and Martijn Westerholt (keyboards). The drum lineup changed constantly over the years; for the debut album, "Enter," a certain Ivar de Graaf took the drums, but he was only there on an interim basis and soon left. The album itself offered average, but at times quite heavy, gothic metal. It would also…
Amon Amarth is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Tumba, a suburb of Stockholm, whose thematic focus is heavily on Norse mythology and Viking history. Formed in 1992 from the predecessor band Scum, Amon Amarth is now one of the best-known representatives of its genre and is signed to the renowned US label Metal Blade Records.
Origins and Naming
The band emerged from the grindcore band Scum, founded in 1988, whose members included Olavi Mikkonen (guitar), Ted Lundström (bass), and the later…
Iced Earth was formed in 1984 by Gene Adams (vocals), Richard Bateman (bass), Greg Seymour (drums), Bill Owens, and Jon Schaffer (guitar) as Purgatory. The name was soon changed to Iced Earth, but before the self-titled debut was released in 1990, all members except Jon and Gene left, leaving the lineup at that time to consist of Randy Shawver (guitar), Dave Abell (bass), and Mike McGill (drums).
After the mediocre album, Gene and Mike left the band and were replaced by John Greely and Rick…
Xandria is undoubtedly considered one of the newer bands in the symphonic metal genre, although the band was actually founded in 1994 by Marco Heubaum (guitar) and Niki Weltz (drums). The two joined forces with a few other musicians and played gothic metal in the style of Paradise Lost. At that time, however, there were no releases, and the band disbanded in 1997. That would have been pretty much it, and no one would be talking about Xandria today if Marco hadn't tried to get the band started…
When the band Powerwolf formed in 2003, the members consciously chose to perform under artistic pseudonyms and cultivate a consistently staged band image, heavily inspired by religious symbolism, dark aesthetics, and a fictional setting. This image quickly became an integral part of their identity and continues to shape their style, stage shows, and lyrics to this day.
Legend has it that Powerwolf was founded by brothers Matthew Greywolf (guitar) and Charles Greywolf (bass and guitar), who met…
Manowar was formed in America in 1980 by Eric Adams (vocals), Ross The Boss (guitar), Joey DeMaio (bass), and Carl Canedy (drums). Carl was quickly out and replaced by Donnie Hamzik, with whom they released "Battle Hymns" in 1982. The album was a huge success, offering brilliant hard rock infused with epic elements and still considered a classic today. The drum lineup changed again, with Scott Columbus as the new drummer. On "Into Glory Ride," the band presented a more epic sound, but also with…
When you hear the term "heavy metal," the first association that springs to mind is certainly Iron Maiden, perhaps alongside Metallica, and not without reason. After all, the band has consistently been one of the most successful bands in the genre since the early 1980s and is one of the most famous in the genre. Even outside the metal scene, every child knows the band's mascot, Eddie the Head. This success, however, was anything but foreseeable when the maidens were founded in 1975 by Paul Day…
Def Leppard were formed in England in 1977 by Joe Elliot (vocals & guitar), Pete Willis (guitar), Rick Savage (bass), and Tony Kenning (drums). Joe soon left the guitar, and Steve Clark was hired. There were also changes on drums before Rick Allen joined. "On Through the Night" was released in 1980. They played heavy metal with hard rock and some glam influences. Unfortunately, they took a soft approach and weren't entirely convincing, but they delivered a decent album and gained a foothold…
When metal first emerged in the 1970s, the majority of bands were primarily based in England; other countries played a minor role at that time. It was in Solingen in 1971 that a band was formed that would spread this music beyond the UK's borders and help the German metal scene achieve its current size. Their name: Accept.
But the road to global fame was long. The first lineup, consisting of Udo Dirkschneider (vocals), Michael Wagener (guitar), Dieter Rubach (bass), and Birke Hoe (drums),…
Running Wild was founded in 1976 by Rock 'N' Rolf Kasparek (vocals & guitar), Uwe Bendig (guitar), Carsten David (bass), and Hasche Hagemann (drums) as Granite Heart. After changing their name and replacing Uwe and Carsten with Preacher Warnecke and, after some back and forth, Stephan Boris, they recorded "Gates To Purgatory" in 1984. The album was strong, and its speed metal with black metal influences attracted attention.
Preacher then left the band and was replaced by Majk Moti. Thus,…
Arguably one of the biggest and most well-known Finnish bands of all time, Nightwish was founded in 1996 by Tarja Turunen (vocals), Emppu Vuorinen (guitar & bass), and Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards). They were joined by drummer Jukka Nevalainen and Sami Vänskä, who took over from Emppu on bass, before recording their debut album, "Angels Fall First," in 1997. The album offered a relatively typical keyboard-heavy power metal sound and would hardly have been special if Tarja's voice, the band's…
Black Label Society is an American heavy metal band founded in 1998 by Zakk Wylde, former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. Wylde is not only the founder, but also the creative force and figurehead of the band—as singer, lead guitarist, and main composer, he has a decisive influence on the musical and visual image of Black Label Society.
Style and musical direction
Musically, the band combines classic heavy metal with southern rock, blues, and doom influences. The result is a powerful, uncompromising…
